Overview of Molise
Molise is the least populated Italian region. This is due mainly to mountainous landscape making it difficult to access and the flow of emigrants abroad, and to other Italian regions. The most populated area is around Campobasso, the regional capital, and along the Adriatic coast, while the mountainous areas are sparsely populated.
The mountainous terrain is crossed by the characteristic tratturi, the historic trails of people and livestock to and from the pastures of Abruzzo and Puglia.
The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise has magnificent landscapes, while the many nature reserves protect the wildlife of the region.
Olives and wine-growing are of importance, as are sunflowers.

Molise is a region located in southern Italy, known for its unspoiled landscapes, traditional villages, and rich culinary heritage. Unlike other regions in Italy, Molise is divided into only two provinces: Campobasso and Isernia. Let’s explore each one:
Campobasso Province:
Capital: Campobasso
Description: Campobasso Province is situated in the western part of Molise and is home to its capital city, Campobasso. The province is characterized by its rugged terrain, rolling hills, and mountainous landscapes. Campobasso, nestled among the hills, features a picturesque old town with medieval architecture, narrow streets, and historic churches. The province also includes the Matese Regional Park, a protected area known for its diverse flora and fauna, as well as the ancient hilltop town of Sepino, with its archaeological site and Roman ruins.
Isernia Province:
Capital: Isernia
Description: Isernia Province is located in the eastern part of Molise and is known for its tranquil countryside, pristine nature reserves, and cultural heritage. Isernia, the provincial capital, is a charming town with a well-preserved historic center, Romanesque churches, and a medieval castle. The province is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Altilia, an ancient Samnite-Roman archaeological site, as well as the Matese Lake District, with its scenic lakes, forests, and hiking trails. Isernia Province also includes the medieval village of Agnone, renowned for its traditional craftsmanship of bells.
